Interview

How did you get to the drums?
I've had drum sets and a studio at home since I was little. I was already allowed to try out the drums there at the age of 3. Growing up in a drummer family has its advantages!

What fascinates you about the drums?
The variety of sound, energy, coordination and precision. When I'm on the drums, I can express my emotions and drive the music. One thing is certain: only when the beat is right does the audience dance.

What has helped you the most when practising?
You need to know where you want to go and start small. It is important to set goals per exercise session, depending on what you want to focus on in the end. Because with work, everything is achievable. But there must also be time left over to be creative and let the music run free. After all, it's about music.

What do you pay particular attention to when teaching?
It is important to me that the students come to the lessons with joy - therefore their wishes, abilities and interests are in the foreground. They get the tools they need to play and topics that motivate them to invest time in the instrument. First comes the music, then the theory.

What has been your greatest experience as a musician so far?
I have spent the last few years touring almost exclusively around the world with Alice Merton. It is fascinating to stand on the most diverse stages in Europe and the USA, to see the audience dance and to present all their energy every night. There have been countless unforgettable moments and shows, but three in particular have left their mark on me: Jimmy Fallon and Jimmy Kimmel's late night shows and the Coachella Festival in Los Angeles.

On which equipment do you prefer to play?
I play Tama Starclassic drumsets, Zildjian cymbals and Vic Firth sticks - for me the best combination of sound and quality that proves itself every day.

What else is important to you in your life besides music?
Family comes first. I love sports and travelling to keep body and mind fit. Besides music, I also develop and programme apps for Apple devices, I never sit still.
