Interview
I started because I saw a friend who played pieces by Led Zeppelin and other rock bands – and I wanted to play with him.
From then on I kept discovering more until I found jazz, which immediately fascinated me.
What fascinates you about your instrument?
It is like a small portable orchestra that can play everything – in every imaginable genre. Since it is smaller and more flexible than the piano, it fits everywhere without losing its character.
What helped you the most when practising?
Giving myself space and accepting that music also emerges from things you don’t expect. Allowing the unexpected has strongly shaped my view on music and practising.
What do you pay special attention to in lessons?
My goal as a teacher is to show you how you can teach yourself something – to give you the tools to learn anything you want, guided only by your own curiosity and experience. The teacher is there to accompany you and provide you with the right tools.
What has been your best experience as a musician so far?
When I wrote a suite dedicated to one of my favourite authors (Italo Calvino) – together with four dancers and improvised music.
It was very entertaining because the suite was dedicated to fantastic and imaginary animals.
What equipment do you prefer to play on?
I prefer to play my Moffa electric guitar and use effect pedals – they are my way of expressing myself on the instrument. Lately, however, I am returning more and more to an acoustic sound.
What is important in your life besides music?
I love running and run marathons. I also enjoy cooking and love having large gatherings with friends and family where we eat together.
